Content Management Tools
September 19, 2005

People often ask how they can easily maintain their own websites. This week we'll look at Mambo, a free PHP-based content-management tool.

Mambo is taking content management by storm. It is a content management tool that makes maintaining websites (with little to no HTML experience or knowledge) much easier for laypeople. Mambo is a child of the strong open-source software movement, which advocates a stronger end product being made due to the source code being known by all. So what makes Mambo so interesting?

Mambo offers a straightforward control panel allowing users instant access to their entire site from any web browser. Users can upload photos, add stories, archive articles, and change menus -- all without knowing a hint of HTML. It can be configured to allow multiple users' accounts with access to varying parts of the site. It supports interactive polls, blogging, and numerous other features. And because it is open-source, there are hundreds of add-on modules that can be downloaded and added to further its capabilities.

Another powerful feature of Mambo is templating. Mambo's content is stored independent of a single template file, so an entire site can be completely redesigned or rebranded simply by redesigning a single template. Imagine launching a brand-new website with all of your old content intact, just with the click of a button.

One of the best features of Mambo? It's totally free to use and distribute. Developers can charge to set up and design sites in Mambo, but we cannot charge for the software itself. This makes Mambo an ideal content management system (CMS) for sites on a budget, or start-ups looking to dabble in CMS.

Mambo is a free download at http://www.mamboserver.com, and the site even features a test-drive of Mambo's administration panel online, allowing users to add content directly to the Mambo site themselves to see if it suits their needs.
